The government is building a dam worth $13 million shillings in Eldoret in order to beat water shortages in Uasin Gishu County.
The Kipkarren Dam Water Supply Project is set to be implemented in Kipkarren, Kapseret Constituency, in Eldoret town.
The dam is funded by the African Development Bank and the Rift Valley Water Works Agency will be implementing it for Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency.
The dam will be completed in 2021, and it will add 23,000 cubic meters of water per day, enough for 50,000 of Eldoret’s residents. The beneficiaries will primarily be from Langas, Kapseret, and Kipkenyo areas in Kapseret.
County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa said that it fas a flagship Jubilee project in Uasin Gishu, meant to cater to the growing population of Uasin Gishu. Jaldesa said that it would help to sustain businesses and investments in Eldoret, noting that demand for water was rising in Eldoret town.
Eldowas Chairman Andrew Chelogoi said that Eldoret residents needed 60,000 cubic meters of water per day and that the water currently provided was 47,950 cubic meters per day. The biggest source of the water consumed in Uasin Gishu County is Chebara Dam in Elgeyo Marakwet, which provides 18,000 cubic meters a day.
