Two solar plants, worth $147, are to be built near Eldoret town. The two utility-scale solar power projects will power 300,000 Kenyan homes. Dubbed Radiant and Eldosol, the solar plants will have a total capacity of 80 megawatts .
The European Investment Bank announced the new project yesterday. The plants will also be funded by Nederlandse FMO, Paramount Bank, and Frontier Energy.
Once completed, the two plants are expected to reduce the country’s reliance on hydro power and power generation from fossil fuels. The European Investment Bank and FMO are each advancing $53 million loans towards the projects while the other partners are providing the remaining funding.
Eldosol will be generating up to 40 megawatts to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company towards the national grid.
