The athlete who is based in the US was arrested after he gave police contradicting information.

Police in Eldoret Kenya were given the go ahead to keep the athlete in custody for another week after they arraigned him in court today.

According to Kapseret police boss Francis Warui, the US-based athlete presented himself to the police yesterday wanting to confirm that it was his wife Gloria Jepleting Sangutei who was found murdered.

The suspect will remain in custody as police finish investigations.
But when he gave the police contradicting information, they became suspicious and arrested him instead.

Warui said that the suspect was questioned by police at Langas Police Station who plan to interrogate him further.

Warui said that he would release the suspect if the suspicions are cleared. Residents of Outspan found the teacher’s body close to a maize field.

Police believe that a rope found at the scene might have been used to strangle her. Gloria Sangutei was a teacher at a school located 20km away from Eldoret CBD.

A neighbor who spoke to her the previous night said that she was going to visit someone at Kenhood Apartments on the night that she was murdered.

This is only the latest in a spate of intimate partner murders that have happened in Eldoret this year.

In February, 26-year-old Fiona Kisuya was murdered and stuffed into a water tank at her home in Kapsoya.

Her boyfriend was arrested in connection with her murder. The suspect asked a neighbor to help him get rid of the body, but the neighbor called the police instead.

A report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has ranked Eldoret as one of the most murder-prone towns in Kenya.

In April, Naftali Kinuthia was charged with the murder of Ivy Wangeci, a medical student at the Moi University School of Health Sciences. Naftali was apprehended after he descended on Ivy with an axe. The couple got married in 2017 but relatives told the media that they have had quarrels which resulted in her leaving her matrimonial home.

Her death came within a week after her husband’s return from the US. On August 13th 2019, the case will be mentioned before High Court Deputy REgistrar Grace Sitati.

Samoei has not recorded a statement and the police are still waiting for a post mortem.
