Eldoret will very soon host a Pediatric Cancer hospital – the only one of its kind in Sub Saharan Africa – at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Grounds.
Shoe4Africa founder Toby Tanser said in an op ed for The Standard newspaper that the foundation would fund the construction of the hospital in a field next to MTRH. The initiative is meant to help reduce deaths resulting from childhood cancers, which Tanser said now stand at 9/10.
The public hospital will be named Juli Anne Perry Children’s Cancer Hospital, after the late wife of one of the donors to the charitable foundation.
The New York City Marathon would be fundraising for the project together with Shoe4Africa and athletes from the City of Champions. Some athletes who have been involved with the Shoe4Africa Foundation include Mary Keitany and Eliud Kipchoge.
Tanser is hoping to open the hospital in 2020, to coincide with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the New York Marathon. Toby Tanser said that Kenyans had won more New York City Marathons than athletes from any other country, and he was looking forward to athletics playing a great role in the project.
New York Marathon chairman George Hirsch is expected to attend the event. Also expected is film star Anthony Edwards who chairs Shoe4Africa. The initiative already enjoys support from the Academy of the new Dutch Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Europe, Professor Terry Vik, and the Samoei Ruto Foundation.
