Livestock in Nandi, Uasin Gishu on Quarantintine as Foot and Mouth Vaccine Shortage Continues

Dairy farmers in Uasin Gishu County could be at risk as the country grapples with a shortage of foot and mouth vaccine. Some counties have already started implementing quarantines to control possible outbreaks. The drugs have been running short for months, putting the country in a crisis situation.

Nandi County is waiting for foot and mouth vaccine to be delivered after paying for the same. Nandi County, Kisii County, and Trans Nzoia County are all on quarantine because of outbreaks.

The disease is spreading quickly in the North Rift region, and stakeholders have gone back to the drawing board to strategize.

Foot and mouth disease affects cattle, sheep, and pigs. Some veterinary doctors say that production of the vaccine has been halted by the quarantine on animals.

Other countries in Eastern Africa rely on Kevevapi for their foot and mouth vaccine supply, meaning that the crisis might be a regional one.

Foot and mouth causes poor appetite, poor milk production, painful sores on the feet, and even lameness.
