A rapist from Shinyalu earned a 10-year jail sentence for raping an 86-year-old granny. On August 16th 2018, the aptly named Dickson Shusia of Shisembe village was asleep in his victim’s bed when the police arrested him.
Before raping the 86-year-old grandmother, Dickson had been convicted of theft multiple times. So how did this man’s career in crime end with him being arrested at the crime scene?
Dickson Shusia broke into the granny’s house through the window, hoping to find some valuables. He ransacked the house. The victim was woken up by the commotion, and he demanded money from her. She only had Sh400.
Angry because she did not have more money to give him, Shusia proceeded to beat up the poor grandmother. Finally, he raped her and for some reason, fell asleep on the same bed where he committed the heinous crime.
Senior Resident Magistrate Erick Malesi ruled that Shusia was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt because he was found at the crime scene with all the evidence intact. There were four witnesses who testified, including the victim. Malesi found him guilty of the additional crime of caressing the victim’s genitalia.
The Shinyalu grandmother is not the only elderly woman to fall victim to a rapist. In September 2018, a woman in her 80s was violated by a violent gang in Kisumu’s Nyahera area. The woman was coughing blood when her relatives found her in the morning.
Meanwhile, back in June of the same year, a 73-year-old Murang’a granny was raped and killed, again by a violent gang. It is a trend that refuses to die.
Elderly women in Nairobi’s Korogocho area have been learning martial arts so that they can defend themselves from rapists. It is said that the rapists view elderly women as easy targets.
