Two solar plants established in Uasin Gishu County are expected to be operational by 2020.
The 106 million Euro projects, funded by the European Investment Bank and the Netherlands Development Finance Corporation will be going into the Radiant and Eldosol solar projects, both of which are located near Eldoret Town, in Uasin Gishu.
The developers of Radiant are a consortium that includes Paramount Universal Bank, Selenkei Investment, Cedate, Frontier Invevstment Management, and Interpro International LLC. Radiant’s 40MW capacity generator will cost $70m, and it will feed into the electricity grid. Radiant already has a purchase agreement in place with the Kenya Power company which provides Kenyans with electricity.
Cedate, Interpro International LLC, Selenkei Investment, and Frontier Investment Management will also team up to develop Eldosol which will also feed into the national power grid. Another power purchasing agreement has been signed with Kenya Power for Eldosol. 140,800 solar panels connected to a step-up transformer will generate the 40MW of power.
Eldosol and Radiant will both be in operation by 2020. Together they will add 80MW to the national power grid form Western Kenya. This will add up to 2% of the national power grid.
