As Kenya announced its first positive coronavirus diagnosis, Uasin Gishu is among 14 counties in Kenya identified as ‘high risk’ for the corona virus. The others are Niarobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Garissa, Kakamega, Wajir, Kisumu, Kajiado, Kilifi, Busia, Mombasa, Migori, Mombasa, Busia, and Nakuru.
The government provided 10,000 coronavirus protective kits to the high-risk counties, while the other counties received 5,000.
Uasin Gishu is among 23 counties that have set up isolation centers in preparation for any eventuality.
The coronavirus protective kits include face masks, eye protection, head covers, gowns, respirators, shoe covers, goggles, face shields, and gloves.
Uasin Gishu is considered high risk because it is a transit county, used by long-distance PSVs to Western Kenya, Turkana, West Pokot, and Uganda. Eldoret also hosts an international airport with cargo planes coming in daily and local flights departing and arriving on a daily basis.
According to Wycliffe Oparanya who is the chairman of the Council of Governors, each of the 47 counties has multi-agency emergency response committees in place. The committees operate at two levels of healthcare.
121,061 people worldwide have tested positive for the coronavirus. 4,368 of them died from the infection and 66,216 recovered.
